Rambouillet is set in over 20,000 hectares of woodland between Versailles and Chartres, a royal then presidential residence. The 14th-century castle with bastions and keep was acquired by Louis XVI in 1783 and was progressively modified into a splendid country residence. The park comprises a French-style garden and an English-style garden which includes the Shell Cottage (1779) and a grotto. 

Palace of the Renaissance period, Maintenon was the home of Madame de Maintenon, the secret wife of The sun King Louis XIV. It has preserved its 12th century square keep. The magnificent gardens has been designed by Le Notre.
